DAB digital radio now covers most major UK population centres,
with
extended coverage coming in the
near future. Digital One, the national commercial digital
radio multiplex, has a coverage area of more than 85% of the
UK population and the BBC currently reaches nearly 85%.
The BBC has publicly stated in the Building Public Value document that DAB coverage will increase to 90% of the UK population. Discussions are currently underway for our next phase of coverage expansion.
This map outlines the current coverage
of national commercial DAB digital radio broadcasts.
Local services
Within each region there is a different multiplex broadcasting
local news, sport, weather, travel news and music of different
genres. There are some local multiplexes yet to launch,
which have already been awarded a licence to broadcast.
The regulator Ofcom
has already allocated local digital licences to multiplex
operators across the United Kingdom, though there are
currently no firm plans for the regulator to award more licences
in the future. Already some regions across the UK now have
access to over 50 stations including the national services.
Within London and the South East you can receive up to 60
stations of great music, news, sport, travel and local information.
Among the many stations include Magic, LBC, Capital FM, Capital
Gold, Jazz FM, Heart 106.2, XFM and some digital only services.
Check your coverage
Before you think about buying a DAB digital
radio, we strongly recommend that you check your postcode
to confirm whether you can receive a good enough signal. This
will also allow you to see what stations you can receive.
